Know the cost before you go
Crypto ATMs charge a fee plus a markup on the price, often 10 to 20% in total. Bitcoin Scouts shows it as money.
- The fee is in the price
Most machines don't add a separate line. They sell you bitcoin above the market price, so the difference is the fee.
- We say where the number came from
A live rate from the operator, a fee they reported, or one a visitor reported, with the time we got it.
- Check the screen before you pay
The machine shows the final amount of bitcoin before you insert cash. If it doesn't match, you can cancel.
How to read the fee on Bitcoin Scouts
We show the all-in fee: the machine's charge plus the difference from the market price (the spread). A 15% fee means $100 in cash gets you about $85 of bitcoin. If the operator also charges a flat amount per transaction, we show it separately.
Every fee says where it came from: a live rate from the operator's system, a fee the operator reported, or one a visitor reported, with the time we got it. Rates change; the machine's screen always shows the final amount before you insert cash.
How to pay less
- Compare: sort by Lowest fee. Two machines on the same street can differ by 8 points.
- Larger purchases sometimes get a better rate; ask the operator.
- If you have a bank account, an exchange app usually costs far less than an ATM.
- Check the screen before you pay. If the amount doesn't match, cancel.
What machines charge
Every state, with the median all-in fee where operators or visitors have reported one. Most machines don't report a fee yet, so states without enough reports say so.
All-in buy fee among machines that report one, shown where at least 3 do. The share that reports is next to each figure: machines with high fees report less often.
